Hello Readers!

Yesterday we said our goodbyes to Chiang Mai, our home for the last 2 weeks, and hopped on a bus headed North. About four hours later, we arrived in Chiang Rai! We are now happily involved in life at Baan Immanuel, an orphanage in Chiang Rai. This place is centered on Jesus. It is beautiful to be here and experiencing the joy and hope that these kids live with. They are always up for some soccer or just running around. Their beautiful smiles are contagious and so far there’s been a lot of laughter going on.

This was our transportation into town to get some fish food. They have a fish farm with over 3000 pretty large fish in it!

We joined the kids and staff today for work day. Chrissy is very strong.

We have LOVED playing with the adorable kids here. They are so sweet, so loving and so ready to have fun!

Life at TawSaeng

With no pictures of us and the kids at TawSaeng posted, it probably looks like we’re big slackers who are just hanging out with elephants all day and haven’t been working at all. But the truth is, we have been working hard with the kids, and been blessed immensely in the process. For the safety of the kids though, we just can’t post any pictures of those amazing times. So, hopefully this will give you a ‘picture’ of our afternoons…

In the early afternoon, we meet with the staff and have a time of worship, teaching and prayer. Larry, the director of TawSaeng, has been focusing this time on getting to know one another and the gifts God has given us. This is leading us into further worship of God for the grace He gives each of us, and bringing us together as we see our unity in Christ. It’s great to be able to work alongside those who are laboring with Christ in Chiang Mai, and pursuing Him no matter the cost.

Around 4pm the kids begin to arrive. For the first hour or so, we play. And we play hard. Some of us have become professional jump-rope swingers and have had to quickly learn the Thai words for ‘slowly’ cha-cha, ‘medium’ bhun-glang and ‘quickly’ reo-reo. The kids are sure to tell us when we have not swung the rope at the exact speed they’ve desired. And for those that aren’t getting scolded for their lack of proficiency in jump-rope swinging, their time is occupied with playing soccer and badminton in an area about the size of a bedroom, reading with kids, drawing, or any number of other crazy and creative things the kids decide to do. For that hour or so, we are completely at their disposal.

After that, on every day of the week there are different English activities. Some days we read an English book to the kids and ask questions about the story. Other days we simply read the story. We’ve also taught them worship songs in English. Just yesterday, a girl I’ve particularly connected with asked me to read Fox in Socks by Dr. Seuss to everyone. For those with kids, you understand how foolish it was for me to allow her to select any book on the shelf to read, particularly whenFox in Socks was an option. For those of you without kids, google it. You’ll see what I mean. But in all seriousness, it was such a joy to read the book with the kids and hear them have fun with the rhymes. And to realize just how much my tongue is not made of rubber.

Next, we all have dinner together with the kids and staff. Bhabua or ‘Auntie’ in English, is a wonderful cook and we never go hungry. The kids certainly enjoy the food too. I remember one girl who excitedly told me that she was having her third bowl for the night. Needless to say, all the food is crazy good. I’ve also noticed that the kids, especially the youngest boys, eat very quickly. This means more time to play. So it doesn’t surprise me one bit.

In the evenings, the children split into three English classes. Kelly, Merari and Lindsay help with the Dolphins (ages 5-8). Chrissy and I help with the Penguins (ages 9-10). And Tessa and Lucy help with the Tigers (ages 11-14). We’ve all noticed how much energy these kids have, regardless of their age. Though we all speak English, none of us have had any significant training in teaching English, so it’s very humbling to be used by God in this way. We’re put in positions where we must look to God for strength and wisdom, and I wouldn’t ask for it to be any other way. One of the things we’ve been asked to do is to create skits that the kids will present to all the classes in a week or so. Even though we won’t be there to see them perform, we are so happy to help them prepare for that big day. I’ve really liked this process of creating skits and doing things I know nothing about. It puts me in a place where I can better understand my dependency on God, and better see how He is providing for everything, including the creative ideas for these skits.

Something God has also made clearer to me as a result of helping at TawSaeng, is just how much He wants me to know His strength, and my weakness. He wants to be the One supplying all my strength, so that He receives glory in whatever He chooses to accomplish through me. Most mornings we have been visiting other organizations, and then going to TawSaeng right after. With the long days, it’s easy to feel tired and think that I don’t have the energy to run around with a kid, or two, on my back. But in those times, I’m looking at myself instead of where I should be, into the eyes of my Creator. With my eyes fixed on Him, He gives strength to carry out His will—to love and share His love with these children, so that they might shine brightly for Him in this neighborhood.

New Life

A little girl was asked to draw a picture of something children have the right to. Her answer was to be protected. She grew up working in a factory and one day she fell asleep while working. As punishment, she was violently stabbed with scissors. After this incident she fled the factory wishing to call the police. Because she had been so oppressed and under-educated, she didn’t even know how to dial a phone to call someone. Instead she ran to the home of a former customer who had shown her kindness. This customer after seeing her wound and how upset she was immediately took her to the hospital where they cared for her. From there she was passed on to the New Life Center.

The new life center is an organization that works to provide education; vocational training and other developmental things to tribal girls that are either at risk for being sexually abused or already have been. After arriving at the center the girl said that her two biggest dreams were to meet her birth mother and get an education. The New Life Center taught her how to pray and she began to pray for these things. Within a few months her mom was found and she was able to meet her. Eventually she was also able to attend school and begin her education. What a great story of hope!

It has been neat to be encouraged through these different ministries here in Thailand. The amount of oppression and spiritual darkness can be overwhelming, but God is at work here. He is bringing up a generation of believers that are hungry for him and are seeking to bring others to him. The task at hand is huge, but God is even bigger than anything the world can throw at us.

This truth is becoming more and more evident through the children at TawSaeng. These children have already experienced things way beyond anything anyone ever should have. And yet, they still have joy. Today they received their Christmas gifts from the staff. It was just a simple outfit, but the way their faces lit up as they pulled the clothes out of the bag was beautiful. Every child had a huge smile on their face and some started pulling the new clothes on without even taking off the clothes they were already wearing. This joy and appreciation for the little things is something we should all take away from these precious children. Even as Christians sometimes we loose sight of how blessed we are. New clothes are not something we are usually truly joyful about. But God calls us to be grateful for what we have, even in the hard times. We must not loose hope. If not for ourselves then let it be for God’s children and his glory.

Break my heart for what breaks Yours

Everything I am for Your Kingdom’s cause

I’ve read about red light districts, seen documentaries on sex trafficking around the world and prayed against this injustice. All of these failed to prepare me for the reality we now face, being situated just around the corner from a red light district. To be here is unreal. For me, this has been one of my biggest struggles while being in Thailand. I’ve felt a mix of emotions towards the situation. Most of the time, I feel really numb. It is incredibly hard to comprehend that there are actually women stuck in the trap of prostitution literally feet from me. It’s hard to comprehend the desperate need for money that these women have. It’s hard to comprehend the brokenness intertwined in the whole situation. At other times, I’m filled with anger. Almost every night we see men, from all over the world, leading beautiful Thai women along the streets towards various bars and hotels. I feel so sick when I see this. One night, I even heard a woman in a bar say to a man, “Do you want me tonight?” It breaks my heart and I feel paralyzed, unable to do anything. To be completely honest, there are moments when I feel intense bitterness and rage towards these men, and I just want to stop it all from happening. But I can’t.

Yet God can. I serve a God who longs for all of His children to experience freedom. My God is against injustice and is working for the redemption of His people. Our team is unable to actually be in the bars reaching out to these people, but God has definitely been leading us to become prayer warriors in our everyday lives. As a team, we are aiming to focus on praying with our eyes open. God has been teaching me so much by being located right in this area of Thailand. For one thing, as I walk by the bars at night, these people I’ve heard so much about now have faces. Rather than sitting in helplessness and fear, God has been calling me to pray for these faces—and prayer is powerful. I’ve also come to realize that I must avoid judging these women. I have no idea what their lives are like, and to pass judgment on them is wrong. I don’t know what it’s like to have a family that expects me to provide for them, no matter the cost. I’ve never had to decide between feeding my children and selling my daughter as a prostitute.

In 1 John 4:19, we are called to love…because we were loved first. Jesus Christ was sent to save all of us. Therefore, we are to love everyone. As I walk through the streets and look into the eyes of these men, rather than let my heart and mind be filled with hatred, I’m led by God to pray. Nothing inside me wants to love these men…only God can make that possible. God is love and this love is so much more powerful than anything I personally can muster up. I’m not aiming to love the sin and brokenness they are involved in, but to love the person that was created in the image of God. We all sin, and while it looks different in each of our lives, none of us deserve the grace of God…and yet God freely gives us grace. This is seriously incredible! I’ve been praying for a better understanding of God’s love for me. Have you read Romans 8 lately? If you haven’t read it lately, or haven’t read it at all, I would suggest reading it. That’s some beautiful truth right there. As I am able to understand that I am loved and forgiven because of grace, I understand that these men are also loved and forgiven…only through the grace of God.

Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?…in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, not anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:35, 37-38

Nothing can separate us from God’s love. There is so much hope exploding from that statement. We were created and are loved by an incredible God. This is why we are in Thailand. We are here because we desire for the whole world to know that they are loved. For these women, knowing Jesus loves them and has forgiven their sin would mean freedom from the chains that hold them in prostitution. It’s about finding their identity in Christ and learning that they are truly beautiful. It’s about healing from brokenness and moving forward in life with hope. For the men, it would mean freedom from shame. It would mean progressing towards fulfilling their created purpose of living for the glory of God. Living in relationship with Jesus does not make life about doing anything to become a better person. It’s about what has been done for you and what is being done in you. It’s about the transforming love, freedom, joy and hope that come with knowing you are forever saved.

Thank you for following our blog so far! God has been so faithful every single day and we know He will continue to be. The past two days have been full of joy and seeing how the Lord is moving here in Chiang Mai. Yesterday morning (Tuesday), we went to a ministry site called Create International, run by YWAM (which was super exciting for me since I am a YWAMer). We walked onto the base and met groups from all over, some from Bethany School of Missions in Minnesota and another group from YWAM Germany. At Create, they have a goal to evangelize to unreached people groups by making videos that portray the gospel so that those who have not heard it yet may hear and understand it in their own language. Many of these videos are animated and are contextualized in order to fit the culture of the people who watch these movies. Lots of hard work goes into this seeing that research must be done about the culture before making this video. Also, actors who know the language must be used in order to make these movies possible. Create International has a vision called the 2020 vision which means that they want to reach 75% of unreached people groups by the year 2020. It was incredible to see the work that they are doing and the commitment they have to make the gospel of Christ known to all people groups. They shared one story about showing a video to a tribe in Northern Thailand and after the video was over, 13 families accepted Christ! Praise the Lord for the work he is doing through Create and in unreached people groups. Keep Create International in your prayers as they continue to make a way for these people to hear about the love of Christ.

After going to Create, it was another day with TawSaeng working with the precious children there. We played games with the kids and had our first classroom time with them teaching them English. It was a challenge for some of us seeing that these kids can get a little wild, but it was fun nonetheless.

This morning, we were able to have an extended amount of time simply being with the Lord before we began our day. It was much needed, and after that we were ready to see what the Lord was going to do with the rest of our day. We had lunch with the TawSaeng staff which consisted of rice, chicken, liver, pork, and spicy noodles—all very good (pretty sure we have more pictures of food than we know what to do with). After that, we headed back to TawSaeng. We had worship and devotions, and then learned some Thai. It was quite hilarious trying to pronounce words that we don’t even know how to spell, but our teachers were very helpful. We were able to use a few words and phrases with the kids that night as we played games with them. Before the night ended, we taught English again and then said goodbye to the kids until tomorrow. It’s been a great couple of days seeing how the Lord is moving, how he continually brings us together in unity, and how he has kept us safe and healthy (for the most part).

Joyfully Adventuring

Can you say that you’ve ridden on an elephant through the jungle and rafted down a river sitting on long pieces of bamboo? No? Well we now can!!

Now that I’ve caught your attention, let me back up. The past two days have been quite an adventure. Yesterday, Sunday, we got to experience a Christian church in Thailand. First of all, praise God that this church exists! It was so exciting to see that even though Thailand is 95% Buddhist there are still people here that love and worship God! (As a side note, they really like Hillsong here ;) )

The adventures continued as we took some of the kids from TawSaeng to a near by park and played. For hours. Playing has the same language everywhere: running and laughing! So we were finally able to interact with them with no miscommunication, just fun! The last of our adventures for Sunday consisted of the Sunday walking market. This is a market that over takes a few miles of streets. It was like walking around any normal street except for the thousands of people pushing you around, hundreds of carts selling thousands of random items, and street performers only adding to the chaos. So ya, maybe not like any normal street…

Ok, now onto the exciting stuff. Elephants and rafting. Yep, that was the majority of our day today. After a long, windy van ride up the mountain we found ourselves on the side of the road where a dirt entrance revealed about 6 full grown elephants walking around. We walked across the kind of bridge Indiana Jones does, climbed up a platform and sat in a “basket” on the back of an elephant, all the while laughing at how differently things would be if we were doing this in America. So we rode on the back of an elephant, no seat belts, just holding on to our seat backs, so we wouldn’t fall off whenever the elephant shifted weight or went down hill. It was exciting, and it was magnificent!

After visiting a hill tribe whose name is pronounced like our American name “Karen” we found ourselves again at an activity that if were in America would have had much more extreme safety precautions. Let me correct myself, it would have HAD safety precautions! In groups of four we stepped onto, literally 8, 3inch thick pieces of bamboo strapped together with strips of tire and began floating down a moving river with our driver stirring us in a similar fashion as a Italian gondola. Get the idea? It was like nothing I have ever done before and it was incredible. The men that drove our rafts were characters to say the least and as a result we got extremely wet!

We concluded our day with a birthday celebration for our dear Lindsay at a restaurant that serves what they call here, “western food”. What we would call, burgers! Yes, we’re in Thailand and yes we should be eating Thai food, but trust me we have been, and what the birthday girl wants, the birthday girl gets. :)

All of this to say, the past two days have been days of adventure, but not only that, that they have been days were I/we have been able to experience God is incredible ways. Whether that was sitting in a church listening to a sermon given in both Thai and English, or running around with little kids whose beautiful faces shine with the creativity of God, or maneuvering through a crowded market place surrounded by a mix of what seemed like representations of every tribe and nation, or riding on the backs of a gigantic, beautiful examples of God creation, or even screaming and laughing as we “floated” down a river, we got to see God in beautiful ways today! And we are so thankful!

Tomorrow we begin our first week of working at TawSaeng. Please continue to keep us in your prayers as we seek to love on these kids despite the language barrier.

Lights in the Darkness

Spiritually, Thailand is mostly in darkness, but there are some lights here. There is such a hold of spirits here. People have spirit houses at their house where they pay respect to the spirits everyday. They do so because the want to please the spirits, for fear of what might happen to them. The people here give spirits authority. The spirit realm is reality here; it is not a thing to be messed with.

Most of Thailand is Buddhist. Buddhism is all about walking the middle life. Whatever life you are given here, that is your life. So if someone is poor or a prostitute, then that is there purpose in life. You do not help them because you may be changing their purpose and you do not want to displease the spirits. At the same time, you seek to do good things to win merit and please the spirits. Girls here Chiang Mai usually get into the sex industry because they want and need money. It is expected when the children move out of the house that they take care of their family and send money. The more money they can send back, the more respect their family gets in the community. Family is emphasized here as well as respect. Put yourself in their shoes, would you go into prostitution to bring your family honor and to help please the spirits? It is hard to be judgmental when you come at it from their perspective.

Also, even if a Buddhist were to become a Christian, they would be blamed for the bad things that happen to themselves, their family, and their community because of doing things to not please the spirits, i.e. bringing a sacrifice to the spirit houses. Their actions not only affect them, but affect everyone around them. It is another reason why it is so hard for a Buddhist to become a Christian. Would you be willing to give up your family and be blamed for bad things happening around you? Maybe even kicked out of your house for Christ? Remember to praise the Lord for the freedom to choose Him without this persecution. Pray for Thailand. Pray that the Lord would continue to move and set His people free. They are His children and have the right to know Jesus. Pray especially for the sexual bondage here and the bondage of fear. Pray for the King of Thailand to become a Christian. Prayer is powerful and changes things in the spiritual realm, which is reality. Please pray for strength for the team as well.

It has also been a blessing to see how the Lord is working in our team. Multiple people have received a word of light for our team and how we are vessels for the light which is Jesus. Even the name “Taw Saeng” means rays of light or shining light. One of the ways we bring light is through prayer. Our team has been learning the importance of prayer. This mission trip is about prayer. With a language barrier, it is often hard to communicate but we can always pray. We can pray specifically for each child in Taw Saeng and have the opportunity to love them with Christ’s love.

“Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” -1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

Arrived in Thailand!

Praise the Lord we got safe to Thailand! His hand was upon us the whole time we were in our flight. Security was no problem, customs didn’t ask a thing about our staying in Thailand and no baggage was lost. The flight was really long but the Lord provided strength but also rest when it was needed.

As a team, we did devotions on the first two chapters of John. In the first chapter, our leader, Lucy, reminded us of the light that God has called us to be: He wants us to shine. It also mentions how lightness will always cover darkness so we should have full trust in that. We talked about the city of Chiang Mai and how much darkness has invaded the city and how God has brought us to share His light.

In addition to the Bible, we brought the book Jesus Calling which in the first day of devotionals reminded us to trust Jesus. It specifically mentioned trusting the Lord in the midst of difficulty and that’s exactly what we’re striving for in our team. During the second day/flight (it’s a little confusing but it was the 5th of January) Brittany, our other leader led us into the second chapter of John and how we should look at what God has done in our past and be grateful for it. All of those struggles have brought us to grow closer to God. The book Jesus Calling reminded us that being victorious means so much more than just being successful. God takes delight in our mistakes, because we don’t have to be perfect to be victorious in Him.

After getting situated in Nice Mum Lodge, the hotel we’re are staying in, we went to eat Thailand food. It was the best food ever! We then served at Taw Saeng, which was also really good! We got to meet the kids, the director of the organization and the staff. They were all deeply in love with God and passionate about their calling. The kids were a huge blessing and we all can’t wait to build relationships with them.

Please pray that the hearts of these kids open to hear about God and that our team stays united. Also pray that we can constantly be reminded that this trip is for the Lord.

A Permeating Fragrance

“But thanks be to God who leads us in triumphal procession in Christ and through us spreads everywhere the fragrance of the knowledge of him.” 2 Corinthians 2:14

The time is just about here for Team Thailand to depart. We are ready for the Lord to move in incredible ways; we are trusting him for big things on this trip. Each of us is a vessel for Jesus to pass through so that others may experience an outpouring of his love. He doesn’t NEED us, but he WANTS to use us. We carry the fragrance of him and we pray that this fragrance permeates to other people as we step foot into airports, airplanes and into the beautiful country of Thailand. For the Lord is drawing all people to himself and he wants to use us to make himself known. His heart is for the nations and one day “every tribe, and language and people and nation” will worship at his feet (Revelation 5:9). So, we go with this in mind and we anticipate what the Lord has in store.

Hello everyone! We are nearing the end of the semester and we can’t believe how fast it has gone. We have been preparing as a team for our trip to Thailand. The Lord has been faithful time and time again with sustaining us, providing for us and showing us even more of his love. He is so good and worthy to be praised.

In one month from now, we will be in Thailand working with Tawsang! We are asking the Lord to give us humility, and to bind us together even more as a team. We ask for prayers for joy, for willingness to follow wherever the Spirit leads us, and for divine appointments with the people we are going to meet and be working with.

Thank you all for supporting us financially and in prayer! We so appreciate it. The Lord is so good and we pray that each of you may encounter his goodness, especially going into the Christmas season and welcoming in the New Year!

Who We Are and What We Are About.

Sawatdee Khrab! That is Thai for “Hello!” We are Team Thailand, a short term mission team that is being sent out by the Biola University Student Missionary Union. This January, for about three weeks, we will be working in Chiang Mai with hill-tribe children, many of whom are at risk of being trafficked into the sex trade. Our whole purpose in going is to share the love of Christ with them and to let them know that they are valued and precious in His sight. The love of Christ compels us, as stated in 2 Corinthians 5:14, to go to the nations and be lights to the people of Chiang Mai.

Each of us has a part to play in this mission; we are all member in the body of Christ. Whatever we do as we prepare for this trip, and as we are in Thailand, we commit to doing it all in the name of Christ Jesus. Without him we are nothing. His word dwells in us RICHLY and we cannot help but spread it to the world. We ask for prayers for unity in our team of seven godly women and that God would prepare our hearts and the hearts of the people we will be ministering to in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. Colossians 3:15-17
